Choosing an extra large rug

Extra large rugs measure over 350 cm on their longest side – big enough to sit under a full seating group, a six-to-eight-seat dining table, or a king-size bed with room to spare. At Rugvista that covers sizes from 250 x 350 cm up to 400 x 500 cm, plus extra-long runners up to 80 x 500 cm for hallways and kitchens. You’ll find them in wool, jute, cotton and flatweave handloom weaves, so you can match pile height and care to the room. Use the guide below to pick the right size and material for your space.

Frequently asked questions

An extra large rug measures over 350 cm on its longest side. At Rugvista, the most popular extra large sizes include 250 x 350 cm, 300 x 400 cm, 300 x 500 cm and 400 x 500 cm, plus extra-long runners at 80 x 400 cm and 80 x 500 cm.

Extra large rugs suit rooms of roughly 4 x 5 m or larger. In a living room that size, a 300 x 400 cm rug is big enough to sit under all your furniture legs. In open-plan spaces, one extra large rug is ideal for defining a single zone, such as the seating or dining area.

Add at least 60-70 cm to each side of your table so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. A six-seat table usually needs an extra large 250 x 350 cm rug; an eight-seat or extending table sits better on 300 x 400 cm.

Yes. A 300 x 400 cm extra large rug fits under a king or super-king bed and extends past the sides and foot, so you step onto something soft. For a framed look instead, use two extra-long runners (80 x 300 cm+) down each side of the bed.

Extra large wool rugs are durable, warm and naturally stain-resistant – a strong all-rounder. Jute adds natural texture but suits lower-traffic rooms. Cotton is lighter and easier to move at large sizes, and often washable. Hand-knotted extra large rugs are the most hard-wearing and work as a statement piece.

Match pile to the room. Flatweave or low-pile extra large rugs (handloom flat, jute) are best under dining tables and in hallways, where chairs need to move and cleaning matters. Medium pile is the all-round choice for large living rooms. High pile or shaggy is softest for a large bedroom or lounge but harder to hoover at this size.
