Choosing a large rug for your living room
A large rug is the size that makes a living room feel pulled together. At 230 cm and over, a large living room rug is long enough to sit under the coffee table with the front legs of the sofa and armchairs resting on it, so the seating area reads as one group. Our rug size guide recommends 200 x 300 cm for both a three seat sofa and a corner sofa. In an open plan room, a large living room rug also marks where the living area begins, and on hard floors it softens echo. One large rug for the living room instead of several small ones means fewer edges to catch on and one surface to hoover.
Measure the seating area first, then leave roughly 30 to 50 cm of bare floor around the rug so it frames the room without touching the walls. If the sofa is extended or the room is on the large side, the next size up may sit better, and our extra large living room rugs start at 350 cm. Large living room rugs in wool hold their shape under furniture legs and spring back where the sofa has pressed into the pile. Low pile and flatweave are quicker to hoover across this much floor, jute adds texture in a room with less foot traffic, and cotton is the lightest to move.
