Afghan FineHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red146 x 188 cm

Afghan Akhche rugs represent a deeply rooted weaving tradition from northern Afghanistan. Woven primarily by Turkmen weavers, these rugs have long been central to nomadic and village life, serving both practical and cultural purposes.

The term Fine in Afghan rugs indicates a careful selection of wool and a more refined execution of traditional designs. This results in a clearer pattern definition and a more resilient pile that ages beautifully, developing a soft patina over the years.

The design is characterised by the iconic elephant's foot or gul motifs, which are repeating octagonal medallions. Set against a rich, dark red field and framed by detailed geometric borders, these ancient symbols represent tribal identity and family heritage.

Owning an Afghan Akhche rug is an appreciation of living history. These pieces are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their robust character, deep cultural significance, and the enduring appeal of their traditional geometric layouts.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Afghanistan, using techniques passed down through generations. Every single knot is tied individually by hand, a process requiring immense patience, precision, and time.

Weighing 8.5 kg for its 188 x 146 cm size, the rug has a substantial and dense construction. This high material weight relative to its size indicates a tightly packed pile and a robust structure, ensuring the rug lies flat and remains durable for decades.

The dedication of the weaver is visible in the slight, charming variations of the pattern and colour. This human touch is what gives the rug its soul and structural integrity, far surpassing any machine-made alternative.
