Afghan FineHand KnottedRug

BlackRunner78 x 278 cm

The weaving traditions of northern Afghanistan have been shaped by nomadic and village communities for generations. Rugs from the Akhche region are deeply rooted in this cultural landscape, where weaving is both a vital domestic craft and a shared artistic heritage passed down through families.

The designation of an Afghan Fine rug points to a refined level of execution within this traditional category. Weavers in these regional workshops select high-quality local wool to produce a runner that balances robust durability with a clearer, more defined expression of the classic patterns.

Visually, this runner is defined by its classic geometric motifs, often referred to as guls, which repeat along the central field. Framed by structured decorative borders, the deep red and black colour palette is achieved using traditional dyeing methods, creating a rich tonal depth that shifts beautifully in different lights.

Owning a hand-knotted Afghan runner connects your home directly to these enduring Central Asian weaving communities. Highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike, these pieces are appreciated for their honest character, structural strength, and the quiet dignity they bring to modern and traditional interiors.

Every detail of this runner has been shaped by hand using traditional knotting techniques that require years of training to master. The artisan ties each individual knot to the warp threads, building the pattern row by row in a slow, deliberate process.

With a total weight of 6.7 kg for its 278 by 78 cm size, this piece demonstrates a remarkably dense and substantial construction. This weight is a direct result of the generous amount of wool packed tightly into the structure, ensuring the runner lies flat and resists shifting underfoot.

The sheer physical effort and time required to complete a runner of this scale by hand is immense, often taking several months of focused work. This dedicated human touch gives the runner its structural integrity, allowing it to withstand decades of foot traffic while retaining its shape.
