Afghan FineHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red83 x 122 cm

The Afghan Akhche tradition is rooted in the northern regions of Afghanistan, where nomadic and village weavers have produced rugs for centuries. These pieces are celebrated for their deep red tones and robust construction, developed to withstand the demands of daily life in rugged environments.

The use of wool for the pile is central to this weaving tradition, valued for its durability and natural lustre. Weavers in this region have perfected the art of hand-knotting, creating rugs that are not only functional floor coverings but also expressions of cultural identity.

Visually, the design is defined by repeating geometric medallions, often referred to as guls, enclosed by detailed decorative borders. The deep red field is beautifully balanced by accents of dark-blue and dark-green, creating a harmonious color palette that is instantly recognisable.

Owning an Afghan Akhche rug connects you to a rich history of Central Asian craftsmanship. These rugs are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their authentic character, honest materials, and the enduring spirit of the weavers who create them.

This rug was crafted entirely by hand using traditional hand-knotting techniques. Every single knot was tied individually by a skilled weaver, a process requiring patience, precision, and decades of shared knowledge passed down through generations.

With a weight of 3.1 kg and dimensions of 122 x 83 cm, the rug has a substantial and dense construction. This weight-to-size ratio indicates a tight weave and a generous use of wool, which ensures the pile remains resilient and holds its shape over years of use.
