Afghan Khal MohammadiHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Red102 x 143 cm

Khal Mohammadi rugs hold a unique place in Afghan weaving history. Unlike most traditional rugs named after the town or tribe where they were made, these pieces are named after a master weaver, Khal Mohammadi, who developed the distinctive style and dye techniques in northern Afghanistan.

The tradition is famous for its innovative approach to natural dyeing, creating deep, lustrous red tones that form the foundation of every piece. Weavers use high-quality wool to ensure the rich colours develop a beautiful patina over time, making these rugs highly sought after for their longevity and visual depth.

The design language of a Khal Mohammadi is characterised by repeating geometric medallions, often referred to as gols, arranged in columns across the central field. These central motifs are framed by multiple intricate borders featuring detailed tribal patterns, creating a balanced and structured composition.

Owning an Afghan Khal Mohammadi means bringing a piece of living history into your home. These rugs are celebrated by collectors and homeowners alike for their robust construction, warm presence, and the enduring legacy of the master weaver who inspired their creation.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a traditional technique requiring immense patience and precision. Every single knot is tied individually by a skilled artisan, representing weeks of dedicated manual work that no machine can replicate.

With a weight of 4.5 kg for its compact 143 x 102 cm size, the rug has a dense and substantial feel. This weight-to-size ratio indicates a thick, tightly packed construction, ensuring the wool pile remains resilient and holds its shape under daily use.

The hand-knitting process allows the weaver to create sharp geometric details and clean lines in the pattern. This level of craftsmanship ensures that the rug is not only beautiful today but built to endure as a lasting piece in your home.
