Afghan Khal MohammadiHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red130 x 194 cm

The Khal Mohammadi rug is named after the legendary Afghan weaver who first developed this specific style of weaving. Originating from the northern regions of Afghanistan, these rugs are celebrated for their deep, saturated red tones, which are achieved through traditional dyeing techniques that produce a distinctive, warm palette often referred to as 'Afghan red'.

Technical excellence is at the heart of the Khal Mohammadi tradition. These rugs are typically crafted with a sturdy foundation, using high-quality wool that is known for its durability and resilience. The wool is processed and spun to create a pile that is both soft and incredibly hard-wearing, making it a practical choice for high-traffic areas of the home while retaining a lustrous finish.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their use of repeating motifs, often featuring 'gul' designs or geometric interpretations of floral elements. The patterns are usually outlined in dark, contrasting colours, which makes the intricate details pop against the vibrant red backdrop. This formal and balanced design language is a hallmark of the tradition, reflecting a long history of nomadic and village weaving heritage.

Collecting a Khal Mohammadi rug is an investment in cultural heritage and human skill. Each piece represents a connection to the rich weaving traditions of the Middle East and the individual expression of the artisan who created it. These rugs are highly valued for their ability to bring a sense of history and authentic craftsmanship into modern homes, serving as a testament to a timeless art form.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who have honed their craft over generations. The process is one of immense patience and precision, where every single knot is tied by hand to build the structure of the pile. This labour-intensive method ensures that the rug possesses a high level of density and structural integrity, resulting in a floor covering that is built to withstand daily use while maintaining its shape and beauty.

The significant weight of 7.8 kg for this 194 x 130 cm rug is a direct reflection of the quality of materials and the density of the knotting. By using a generous amount of wool, the artisans have created a substantial, high-quality piece that feels grounded and durable. This density is what gives the rug its luxurious feel and ensures that the intricate patterns remain sharp and clear, showcasing the dedication of the maker.
