Afghan Khal MohammadiHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black75 x 124 cm

Khal Mohammadi rugs hold a unique place in Afghan weaving history. Unlike many traditional styles named after tribes or towns, this category is named after Khal Mohammad, an innovative master dyer and weaver from northern Afghanistan who developed these distinctive designs and deep red dye recipes in the late twentieth century.

The hallmark of this tradition is the exceptional quality of the wool and the clarity of the natural dyes. The wool is carefully spun to ensure it absorbs the rich pigments evenly, resulting in a lustrous finish that develops a beautiful sheen over time.

The design is characterised by repeating geometric medallions, often referred to as göls, arranged in structured rows across a deep red or copper-toned field. These motifs are framed by detailed decorative borders that give the rug its balanced, formal appearance.

Owning an Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug means acquiring a piece of modern weaving history. Highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike, these rugs are celebrated for their structural integrity, rich colour palette, and the enduring appeal of their geometric designs.

Every single knot in this rug has been tied by hand by a skilled artisan in Afghanistan. This traditional hand-knotting process requires immense patience and precision, resulting in a robust structure that is built to endure daily life.

With a weight of 2.9 kg for its compact 124 x 75 cm size, this piece demonstrates a dense and substantial construction. The weight reflects the generous amount of high-quality wool packed into the pile, ensuring the rug lies flat and retains its shape over years of use.
