Afghan Khal MohammadiHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black77 x 120 cm

Khal Mohammadi rugs hold a unique place in the weaving traditions of Northern Afghanistan. Unlike many regional styles named after towns or tribes, these rugs are named after a legendary master dyer and weaver, Khal Mohammadi, who developed the signature deep red tones and robust structures that define the style.

The tradition is celebrated for its exceptional wool quality and innovative dyeing techniques. The wool is sourced locally and treated with natural dyes to achieve the iconic, lustrous copper-red and dark blue shades that give these pieces their characteristic warmth and depth.

The design language of a Khal Mohammadi rug is instantly recognisable, characterised by repeating rows of medallions surrounded by detailed decorative borders. These geometric motifs carry deep cultural significance, representing unity, protection, and the rich nomadic heritage of the region.

Today, owning an Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug means acquiring a piece of living history. These contemporary creations continue to be highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their durability, rich cultural weight, and the distinct warmth they bring to modern interiors.

This rug was entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Afghanistan, a process requiring patience, precision, and years of training. Every single knot was placed individually by hand, ensuring a level of structural integrity and character that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match.

Weighing 2.9 kg for its compact 120 x 77 cm size, the rug has a dense and substantial feel. This weight is a direct result of the high-quality wool used and the tight packing of the knots, which ensures the pile remains upright and resilient.
