Afghan Khal MohammadiHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black78 x 121 cm

Khal Mohammadi rugs originate from northern Afghanistan, representing a distinct and highly respected branch of Afghan weaving. Unlike many traditional styles named after specific towns or tribes, these rugs are named after a master dyer and weaver who developed the iconic deep red tones and robust structures.

The tradition is celebrated for its innovative wool-dyeing techniques, which produce lustrous, long-lasting colours. The use of high-quality local wool ensures that the pile remains resilient and retains its rich appearance through generations of use.

Visually, the style is defined by repeating geometric motifs, often referred to as guls or medallions, set against a warm red background. These patterns are framed by intricate borders that reflect the nomadic and village heritages of the region.

Highly valued by collectors, Afghan Khal Mohammadi rugs are appreciated for their exceptional durability and cultural significance. Acquiring one brings a piece of Middle Eastern craft history and authentic tribal artistry into a contemporary living space.

Hand-knotted by skilled weavers in Afghanistan, this rug represents a significant investment of time and traditional skill. Every knot is placed individually by hand, creating a robust structure that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match.

Weighing 2.9 kg for its compact 121 x 78 cm size, the rug has a dense and substantial feel. This weight is a direct result of the quality wool used and the tightness of the weave, ensuring the piece lies flat and retains its shape for years to come.
