AfsharHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black158 x 235 cm

Afshar rugs originate from the nomadic and semi-nomadic Afshar tribes of the Middle East. These people have a long history of weaving, carrying their looms with them as they moved across the mountainous regions, which has deeply influenced the vibrant and resilient character of their textiles.

The craft is defined by a deep commitment to traditional weaving techniques that prioritise strength and longevity. The wool is known for its natural lustre and resilience, which is why these rugs have remained highly sought after by collectors for generations.

Visually, Afshar rugs are immediately recognisable by their strong geometric language. You will often find bold, angular medallions and stylised floral or tribal motifs that reflect the weavers' environment and cultural heritage. The use of deep, saturated colours like red and dark blue is a hallmark of the tradition.

Collectors value Afshar rugs for their raw, authentic spirit and the immense skill required to produce them. Owning one is an investment in a living tradition that bridges the gap between ancient artistry and contemporary home styling, offering a piece of history that remains relevant in any modern home.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans. The process involves thousands of individual knots tied by hand onto a sturdy foundation, a labour-intensive method that ensures both the complexity of the design and the long-term durability of the finished piece.

With a weight of 9.3 kg, the rug demonstrates the significant amount of wool and effort invested in its creation. This density is a testament to the time-honoured techniques used to secure the pile, resulting in a substantial, high-quality floor covering built to endure for years to come.
