Berber-style rugs are deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of North Africa, yet their influence has spread across global weaving regions, including Afghanistan. These rugs are celebrated for their expressive, often geometric designs and the use of natural materials that reflect the environment of their makers.

The term 'Berber' refers to the indigenous peoples of North Africa, whose weaving heritage is characterised by a mix of functional utility and artistic storytelling. While traditionally associated with nomadic life, these designs have evolved, with weavers in various regions adapting the style to suit contemporary aesthetic preferences while maintaining the core principles of the craft.

Visually, these rugs are known for their bold use of colour and rhythm. The patterns often feature alternating blocks or stripes, utilising traditional motifs that carry historical significance. The blend of vibrant shades against more neutral or dark backgrounds is a hallmark of this tradition, turning every rug into a canvas of cultural expression.

Collecting a rug from this tradition is an act of preserving a long-standing craft. These pieces are valued for their raw, authentic beauty and the immense skill required to produce them. Owning one means connecting with a heritage of human creativity that transcends borders and remains a cornerstone of textile history.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to bring each piece to life. This traditional process involves tying thousands of individual knots by hand, a labour-intensive method that ensures the rug's structural integrity and lasting durability.

With a weight of 4.9 kg, this rug demonstrates a significant investment of material and time. The careful balance between the density of the knots and the quality of the Wool foundation results in a robust, resilient piece that is built to maintain its beauty for many years to come.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
