Bidjar rugs originate from the Kurdish region of the Middle East, specifically from the town of the same name. Known historically as the 'Iron Rugs' of the region, they are legendary for their incredible durability and dense, heavy construction, a reputation that has solidified their place in the world of fine textiles.

The term 'Iron Rug' refers to the unique weaving technique where the foundation is packed so tightly that the rug becomes exceptionally stiff and resilient. This density is achieved by using a specialised wet-weaving process that locks the Wool pile firmly in place, creating a surface that is remarkably resistant to wear and tear.

Visually, these rugs are defined by a sophisticated design language that often features a bold central medallion surrounded by a complex field of floral motifs or the classic Herati pattern. The borders are typically wide and well-proportioned, framing the intricate central work with a sense of formal balance that has been perfected over generations of weaving.

Collecting a piece from this tradition means acquiring a work of art that bridges the gap between functional utility and cultural heritage. Because of their legendary strength and timeless aesthetic, these rugs are highly prized by collectors who value the intersection of master-level skill, regional identity, and the ability to maintain beauty even after decades of use.

This rug is created through a dedicated hand-knotted process, where each individual knot is tied by hand onto a cotton foundation. This labour-intensive method ensures that the pile is exceptionally secure and dense, which is essential for both the longevity of the rug and the crispness of its intricate design.

With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the artisan has invested a significant amount of time and precision into every square centimetre. This high knot count is directly responsible for the rug's structural integrity, ensuring that it remains a durable, high-quality piece that can withstand years of use without losing its form or detail.

The total weight of 7.7 kg for this 152 x 105 cm rug is a testament to the generous amount of materials used in its construction. This substantial weight reflects a robust, dense build that confirms the skill and effort poured into its creation, resulting in a floor piece that feels solid, substantial, and built to last for generations.
