Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black203 x 303 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road trading hub of Bukhara in Central Asia, where nomadic weaving traditions flourished. Over generations, master weavers migrated and established thriving craft communities in Pakistan, bringing their intricate techniques and design sensibilities with them.

The 2ply designation in the name refers to a construction method where two strands of wool are twisted together before being knotted. This two-ply technique produces a noticeably denser, more lustrous, and harder-wearing pile than single-ply alternatives, ensuring the rug handles daily foot traffic with ease.

The visual language of this tradition is defined by the repeating gul motif, an octagonal or elephant-foot medallion arranged in neat geometric rows across the field. Enclosed by orderly border guards, these motifs have been refined over centuries to create a sense of balanced symmetry and visual harmony.

Collecting a Pakistani Bokhara means acquiring a piece of living textile heritage. The combination of durable wool construction and centuries-old design traditions makes these rugs valued companions in the home, holding their beauty and cultural weight for generations.

Crafted entirely by hand, this rug represents months of dedicated human labour and precise hand knotting. Artisans tie each individual knot by hand, achieving a total count of approximately 984,330 knots across the entire surface of the rug.

This high density of 160,000 knots per m2 demands immense skill and patience. A knot count of this scale ensures that the pattern remains sharp, the pile stays densely packed, and the structure holds up reliably to everyday living.

Weighing 15.4 kg across a 303 x 203 cm format, the substantial weight reflects the heavy investment of material and intensive labour required to build such a robust, long-lasting foundation.
