Bokhara 3plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black138 x 188 cm

Bokhara rugs trace their design roots back to the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, where nomadic tribes wove portable floor coverings with distinctive geometric layouts. Over generations, these decorative traditions migrated south into Pakistan, where local artisans refined the technique to create some of the finest wool rugs available today.

The term 3ply refers to the construction of the yarn, where three individual strands of wool are twisted together before knotting. This multi-strand approach produces a significantly denser, more lustrous, and harder-wearing pile than single-ply alternatives, ensuring the rug keeps its rich appearance over years of use.

Visually, this tradition is defined by repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal or elephant-foot medallions arranged in orderly rows across a rich red field. These central symbols are typically framed by elaborate geometric borders, creating a balanced design language that feels both structured and welcoming.

Rugs from this lineage are valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their enduring quality and cultural resonance. Owning one means welcoming a piece of centuries-old textile artistry into your home, crafted with a level of skill that honors traditional makers.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Pakistan, representing weeks of dedicated human labour and traditional expertise. Every single knot is tied by hand, resulting in a robust structure that simply cannot be replicated by machinery.

With a density of 250,000 knots per m2 distributed across the 188 x 138 cm dimensions, the creation of this piece required roughly 650,000 individual hand-tied knots. This meticulous density ensures that the intricate geometric patterns remain sharp and well-defined while giving the pile its substantial weight of 8 kg.

The time and precision invested in this construction mean the wool fibers are held securely in place, ensuring the rug retains its dense feel and structural integrity through generations of daily use.
