Bokhara 3plyHand KnottedRug

Dark grey / Black168 x 240 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, which historically served as a major trading hub for exquisite hand-knotted textiles. Over generations, nomadic weaving traditions migrated and found a vibrant home in Pakistan, where skilled artisans continue to produce some of the finest examples of this revered style today.

The 3ply designation refers to the specific construction of the yarn, where three strands of wool are twisted together before knotting. This technique produces a noticeably denser, heavier, and more lustrous pile compared to single-ply variations, creating a durable surface that withstands daily life while maintaining its rich appearance.

The visual language of this tradition is defined by repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal or elephant-foot medallions arranged in neat rows across the field. Enclosed by structured geometric borders, these motifs connect modern interiors with centuries of design evolution, though this particular piece stands out with its unusual and sophisticated blue colour palette.

Collecting a Bokhara rug means embracing a deep cultural legacy rooted in patience and generational skill. Owning such a piece is a celebration of authentic craftsmanship, bringing enduring warmth and timeless artistry into your living space.

This rug is entirely handmade through traditional hand-knotted techniques, representing hundreds of hours of dedicated human labor and exceptional artisan skill. Every single knot is tied by hand onto the foundation to create a sturdy and resilient structure.

With a density of 250,000 knots per m2 across its 240 x 168 cm dimensions, skilled artisans placed approximately 1,008,000 individual knots by hand. This remarkable precision demands months of focused craftsmanship, resulting in a dense pile and sharp, well-defined patterns that simply cannot be replicated by machines.

The substantial weight of 12.5 kg further highlights the high concentration of natural wool and the dense packing of the knots, ensuring a robust and long-lasting quality that justifies its place as a valued centrepiece in your home.
