China 90 LineHand KnottedRug

Brown / Orange52 x 87 cm

The tradition of rug weaving in China is a storied craft that has evolved over centuries, blending local aesthetic sensibilities with refined technical mastery. Historically, these rugs were highly prized for their artistic sophistication and were often commissioned for scholarly or imperial settings, emphasising a balance between nature-inspired motifs and geometric discipline.

The term 90 Line refers to a specific system of measuring the quality and density of the weave, which has been a standard in Chinese rug making for generations. This measurement system ensures that the pile is sufficiently dense to hold complex designs clearly while providing a surface that is both soft to the touch and highly durable for daily use.

Floral motifs are a hallmark of this tradition, often drawing from classical Chinese art forms. The designs frequently incorporate elegant scrolls and balanced arrangements, creating a sense of order and tranquillity. The use of soft, harmonious colour palettes is intended to evoke a calm atmosphere, making these rugs a popular choice for those seeking a serene living environment.

Owning a piece from this tradition is an investment in cultural heritage and skilled labour. These rugs are valued by collectors not only for their visual appeal but also for the depth of history embedded in every knot. By choosing this piece, you are preserving a legacy of craftsmanship that continues to be celebrated for its grace and longevity.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate significant time and effort to each creation. The process begins with the careful tensioning of the foundation, upon which every individual strand of Wool is tied by hand to build the complete design.

With a density of 90,000 knots per m2, the creation of this rug is a labour-intensive endeavour that requires immense precision and patience. This high level of craftsmanship ensures a dense, resilient pile that holds its shape and pattern detail over time, standing as a testament to the artisan's dedication.

The total weight of 2.7 kg across its size is a direct result of the high-quality materials and the compact, dense knotting technique used. This substantial construction not only provides a luxurious feel but also guarantees a level of durability that mass-produced alternatives simply cannot match.
