China 90 LineHand KnottedRug

Beige / Dark blue60 x 90 cm

China has a storied history of rug weaving that stretches back centuries, evolving from functional floor coverings into highly regarded artistic expressions. While early Chinese rugs were often influenced by religious and imperial motifs, the tradition flourished over time by incorporating diverse regional styles and sophisticated dyeing techniques.

The term '90 Line' refers to a specific traditional grading system used in Chinese rug making, which denotes the density of the knots across the rug's width. This system has long been the standard for ensuring a consistent, high-quality pile that feels both dense and luxurious, providing a balance of durability and comfort that makes these rugs a staple for collectors.

Design-wise, Chinese rugs are celebrated for their distinctive use of negative space and clear, intentional motifs. Unlike many other traditions that favour crowded patterns, these pieces often feature a central medallion or carefully placed floral elements, such as roses and lotus blossoms, which stand out clearly against a clean, vibrant field.

Owning a hand-knotted piece from this tradition is a testament to the enduring appeal of craftsmanship. These rugs are highly valued not only for their aesthetic grace but also for the skill required to translate complex designs into a tactile, woven reality. They represent a bridge between ancient techniques and modern home comfort.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and precision. By individually tying each strand of Wool onto the foundation, the artisans ensure that the pattern remains sharp and the pile stays dense, creating a rug that is as resilient as it is beautiful.

With a weight of 2.7 kg packed into its compact 90 x 60 cm size, this piece demonstrates a dense and sturdy construction. This high weight-to-size ratio is a direct result of the intensive labour and material density invested during the hand-knotting process, ensuring a robust product that maintains its shape and integrity over time.

The dedication required to craft a piece of this nature is significant, with every square centimetre reflecting the skill of the weaver. This focus on craftsmanship results in a premium, long-lasting item that stands apart from mass-produced alternatives, offering you a unique piece of functional art.
