Chinese rug weaving holds a long and storied tradition, distinct from other regional styles due to its unique approach to floral motifs and sculptural pile. Historically, these rugs were often commissioned for scholarly or imperial settings, emphasising harmony and balanced aesthetics that have been refined over centuries of practice.

The '90 Line' designation refers to a traditional system of measuring knot density, specifically counting the number of knots per foot along the width of the rug. This technical standard has been a hallmark of Chinese craft for generations, ensuring a consistent level of detail and structural integrity that distinguishes these pieces from other weaving traditions.

Visually, these rugs are often defined by their bold use of open space and high-relief carving. Unlike the dense, all-over patterns found in some other regions, Chinese rugs often feature a central medallion or a sparse, deliberate arrangement of blossoms and vines, creating a sense of calm and openness that is highly valued in modern interior design.

Owning a hand-knotted piece from China is an investment in a heritage of patience and skill. These rugs are collected not only for their visual impact but for the tangible sense of history they carry, representing a bridge between ancient techniques and the modern home.

This rug is crafted using a meticulous hand-knotted technique, a process that requires immense patience and precision from skilled artisans. Each individual knot is tied by hand, building the design layer by layer to ensure that the final product is not only beautiful but also structurally sound and long-lasting.

The weight of 2.7 kg for this 90 x 60 cm piece is a testament to the density and quality of materials used in its construction. This significant weight indicates a high concentration of material, which translates into a robust foundation and a pile that will maintain its shape and soft texture through years of regular use.
