HamadanHand KnottedRug

Dark red / BrownRunner106 x 318 cm

Hamadan rugs take their name from one of the oldest cities in the Middle East, a historic hub located on the ancient trade routes that once linked the East to the West. This region has a long-standing reputation for producing durable, practical rugs that were traditionally used in both nomadic settings and village households.

The term Hamadan refers to a broad tradition of weaving rather than a single style, encompassing hundreds of surrounding villages that each contribute their own design flair. This regional diversity is why these rugs are so highly prized by collectors, as they represent a vast tapestry of local weaving knowledge passed down through generations.

Visually, these rugs are often characterised by their deep, earthy colour palettes and geometric motifs. While they frequently feature central medallions or repeating patterns, it is common to see individual weavers express their creativity through variations in border designs or the inclusion of small, stylised floral elements that reflect their specific village heritage.

Owning a Hamadan rug is an investment in a living tradition. These pieces are valued not only for their robust construction but also for the cultural continuity they represent. By bringing one into your home, you are preserving the skill and history of a region known for its dedication to creating floor coverings that are built to last.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a process that represents hundreds of hours of focused, skilled labour. By tying each individual knot by hand, the artisan ensures a level of structural integrity and pattern clarity that simply cannot be achieved through mechanical means.

With a weight of 11.8 kg for this 318 x 106 cm runner, the rug is exceptionally substantial. This significant weight indicates a high density of material, which directly translates to a more resilient pile that will stand up to daily wear while maintaining its shape and texture.

The time and precision invested in this piece are evident in its tight, consistent knotting. This level of craft results in a durable foundation that feels both substantial and luxurious, justifying the care and effort that went into every single detail of its creation.
