Heriz rugs originate from the mountainous regions of the Middle East, specifically near the town of Heriz in Northwest Azerbaijan. This area is historically famous for producing floor coverings that are as sturdy as the rugged landscape itself, often utilising high-quality wool that is known for its incredible resilience and natural lustre.

The construction of a Heriz is defined by its robust foundation. The use of a cotton base provides the necessary structural integrity for the heavy wool pile, allowing for intricate geometric designs to remain sharp and clear over decades of use. This structural marriage of materials is what gives the Heriz its legendary reputation for lasting a lifetime.

Visually, these rugs are celebrated for their large, bold geometric medallions that dominate the central field. Unlike the flowing, curvilinear patterns found in other regional styles, the Heriz features angular, stylised floral motifs and serrated leaves, often set against a deep, dramatic background that draws the eye inward.

Collectors and design enthusiasts value Heriz rugs for their artistic integrity and cultural significance. Each rug tells a story of local tradition and individual skill, making them more than just functional items. Owning a Heriz is an act of preserving a centuries-old craft that continues to influence interior design around the world today.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that reflects true craftsmanship and dedication. The artisan spends countless hours ensuring that each individual knot is placed with precision, a method that translates into a significantly more durable and resilient floor covering compared to mass-produced alternatives.

The substantial weight of 33.8 kg for this 275 x 205 cm piece is a direct result of the generous amount of wool used in its construction. This density not only contributes to its longevity but also provides a superior level of comfort and insulation, ensuring that the rug remains a staple in your home for many years to come.
