Kazak FineHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black159 x 227 cm

Kazak rugs take their name from the town of Kazakh in the southern Caucasus region, though the weaving tradition has since thrived across parts of Central Asia and Afghanistan. Historically, nomadic and village weavers created these pieces using local materials and traditional motifs passed down through generations, making each region's output distinct in character.

The construction relies on a dense pile tied securely to the foundation, resulting in a durable and resilient surface. This traditional method ensures that the wool stands up well to everyday use while maintaining a rich texture that feels pleasant and grounding in the home.

Visually, Kazak rugs are celebrated for their bold geometric medallions, star motifs, and striking borders rendered in earthy tones. This particular piece features a prominent central diamond medallion surrounded by smaller geometric fillers and tribal symbols, set against a contrasting field that highlights the intricate layout.

Owning a Kazak rug means bringing a piece of living textile history into your interior. These rugs are valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their cultural depth, honest materials, and the enduring skill required to bring their traditional designs to life.

This rug is entirely handmade using a traditional hand-knotted technique, representing weeks and months of careful human labour. Skilled artisans tie each individual knot by hand onto the foundation, ensuring the structure is robust and enduring.

With a total area of approximately 3.61 m2 and a knot density of 90,000 knots per m2, this piece contains around 324,000 hand-tied knots. This immense concentration of manual work requires immense patience and precision from the weaver, resulting in a dense pile and a sharp, well-defined motif.

Weighing 10.8 kg, the substantial weight reflects the generous amount of natural wool and tight foundation packing invested in its creation. This level of craftsmanship ensures a durable structure that holds its form and beauty for years to come.
