KeshanHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Brown250 x 353 cm

The Keshan rug tradition finds its roots in the historic city of Kashan, a desert oasis that has long been a centre for fine textile production in the Middle East. Known for its sophisticated weaving heritage, the region has historically been favoured by royalty and elite patrons, which influenced the development of the intricate, highly detailed styles we recognise today.

A defining quality of these rugs is the use of high-quality materials and a refined knotting technique that allows for delicate, flowing designs. The term Keshan refers to this specific style of weaving which emphasises both durability and aesthetic grace. The precision involved in creating these rugs has been passed down through generations, ensuring that the tradition remains vibrant and technically demanding.

Visually, Keshan rugs are celebrated for their classic medallion layouts and elaborate floral borders. The patterns often feature stylised blossoms, palmettes, and scrolling vines that create a harmonious, balanced composition. The use of a central medallion is a hallmark of this tradition, designed to draw the eye and anchor the room, while the surrounding field is filled with rich, rhythmic motifs.

Collecting a rug from this heritage is about more than just decor; it is about preserving a piece of artistic history. These rugs are highly valued for their ability to blend seamlessly into sophisticated interiors while retaining their cultural significance. Owning one means participating in a legacy of skill and patience that has defined Middle Eastern artistry for centuries.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who have spent years mastering their craft. The process is incredibly labour-intensive, requiring precise, individual knotting to build the pile. With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the creation of this specific piece represents hundreds of hours of focused effort, ensuring a level of structural integrity and pattern clarity that machines cannot emulate.

The weight of 32.7 kg across its 353 x 250 cm dimensions is a direct result of the high-quality materials and the dense, sturdy construction. This substantial weight is a key indicator of its superior quality and durability, as it reflects the sheer amount of wool used to create a pile that is built to last for generations. Every knot is placed with intent, contributing to a robust foundation that keeps the rug lying flat and looking beautiful for years.
