KeshanHand KnottedRug

Brown / Orange303 x 406 cm

The Keshan rug tradition originates from the historic city of Kashan, situated on the edge of the central deserts of the Middle East. This region has long been a vital hub on the ancient trade routes, allowing local weavers to draw inspiration from diverse cultures while refining their own distinct approach to textile arts that dates back centuries.

The term Keshan refers to both the origin and a specific style of construction that emphasises durability and aesthetic harmony. These rugs are typically characterised by a high-density knotting technique, which allows for the fluid, curved lines found in their iconic floral patterns. This density is a hallmark of quality, ensuring the rug remains a long-lasting heirloom.

Signature design elements of the Keshan include a central medallion surrounded by a field of densely packed blossoms, scrolling vines, and palmettes. The border is often as ornate as the field, featuring repeating motifs that frame the composition perfectly. While traditional palettes often lean toward rich reds and deep blues, this piece showcases a sophisticated interpretation with a lighter, airy field that highlights the intricacy of the design.

Owning a piece from this tradition is an investment in cultural heritage. Collectors value these rugs for their balance of artistic expression and technical excellence. Each piece represents a connection to a lineage of master weavers whose skills have been passed down through generations, making every rug a significant addition to any collection.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to its creation. By tying each individual knot by hand, the weavers achieve a level of structural density and pattern complexity that is impossible to replicate through mechanical means, resulting in a floor covering of exceptional durability.

With a total area of approximately 12.3 m2 and a density of 250,000 knots per m2, this piece contains over 3 million hand-tied knots. This immense human investment is the foundation of its quality, ensuring that the pile is not only dense and luxurious but also resilient enough to withstand the demands of a busy home.

The substantial weight of 45.5 kg is a testament to the generous amount of high-quality Wool used in its construction. This weight, combined with the precision of the knotting process, provides the rug with its characteristic heft and flat-lying stability, demonstrating the commitment to craft that defines every stage of its production.
