Design

This flatwoven rug features a complex geometric layout with stacked diamond motifs and traditional tribal borders. The vibrant orange and blue colour blocks are balanced by natural beige tones, creating a warm, inviting pattern with short fringes at the ends.

Kelim rugs from Afghanistan represent one of the oldest flatweaving traditions in the world. Originally crafted by nomadic tribes for practical use as tents, blankets, and floor coverings, these rugs have evolved while keeping their deep cultural roots intact.

The term Kelim refers to a flat, pileless rug made using a slit-weave technique. This process creates crisp, geometric lines and a reversible design, making the rug lightweight yet remarkably durable. The absence of a knotted pile highlights the pure structure of the wool threads.

The visual language of the Kelim Afghan Old Style is defined by bold geometric patterns, including stacked diamonds, zig-zag lines, and protective tribal motifs. Historically, these symbols carried meanings of family, protection, and nature, woven into the fabric as a form of visual storytelling.

Today, these rugs are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their rustic charm and historical weight. Acquiring an authentic Afghan Kelim is more than just buying a floor covering; it is welcoming a piece of living weaving history into your home.

This rug is entirely hand-woven by skilled artisans in Afghanistan, a region with a long and proud history of textile weaving. The flatweave technique requires immense skill, as the weaver creates the pattern directly by interlacing the warp and weft threads.

Weighing 1.6 kg for its 152 x 105 cm size, the rug demonstrates a tight, dense weave that ensures excellent durability. Every block of colour and tribal motif is formed with careful tension, resulting in a stable structure that lies flat on your floor.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
