Afghan Kelim Old Style - A Warm Accent for Your Living Room

Discover a truly unique Afghan Kelim featuring traditional geometric patterns in a vibrant multicolour palette, crafted entirely by hand.

This genuine Afghan Kelim brings an authentic touch of traditional craftsmanship straight to your home. Measuring 181 x 120 cm, it features a low 5 mm profile that fits easily beneath furniture whilst adding a welcoming layer of warmth and texture to your floor.

Woven from 100% wool, the surface feels natural beneath your feet and provides a comfortable, inviting foundation for daily living. The wool fibres also offer natural sound-absorbing qualities, helping to create a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere in your living space.

Because each piece is individually crafted, this rug is completely unique. No two rugs are identical, meaning the exact combination of motifs and tones you see here will never be replicated again, making it a truly personal addition to your interior.

Originating from Afghanistan, this flatwoven piece carries forward centuries of weaving heritage. It brings both cultural provenance and lasting visual interest to everyday rooms, offering a considered choice for anyone who appreciates genuine handmade character.

Kelim weaving has deep roots across Central Asia and the wider Middle East, where nomadic and village communities traditionally created flatwoven textiles for everyday use as floor coverings, blankets, and storage bags. Over generations, these utilitarian items evolved into celebrated forms of folk art, with families passing down specific weaving techniques and pattern vocabularies.

As flatwoven textiles lacking a traditional pile, Kelims are constructed by tightly interlacing the coloured weft threads over the vertical warp threads. This technique creates a lightweight yet remarkably durable fabric that lies flat on the floor, prized for its versatility and reversible design.

The visual language of Afghan Kelims is defined by bold geometric motifs, diamond medallions, and tribal symbols inherited from regional heritage. The vibrant colour palette utilises traditional dyeing methods, bringing together contrasting tones that interact to create a lively and engaging surface rhythm.

Collecting these traditional flatweaves connects your home to a rich lineage of textile artistry. Owning an authentic handmade Kelim means preserving a piece of cultural history and honouring the skilled hands that brought the motifs to life through patient craftsmanship.

This rug is entirely handmade through traditional hand-weaving techniques, a craft that requires immense skill and patience. Artisans spend weeks carefully passing the wool weft threads through the warp foundation by hand, building the intricate flatwoven structure without the aid of machinery.

Weighing 2.2 kg across its 181 x 120 cm dimensions, the construction demonstrates a dense and sturdy build. This weight reflects the generous amount of natural wool and the tight tension applied during the weaving process, ensuring a durable flatweave designed to handle everyday life.

The absence of a pile means the pattern relies entirely on the precise alignment of the woven colour blocks. Every single motif is meticulously placed by hand, resulting in the clean geometric lines and structural integrity that define this authentic Afghan Kelim.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
