Kelim Afghan Old Style - A Warm Welcome for Your Hallway

This one-of-a-kind Kelim Afghan Old Style runner brings the rich weaving traditions of Afghanistan into your home, featuring vibrant geometric motifs hand-woven in wool.

This hand-woven wool runner offers a practical way to introduce warmth and character to your transition spaces. Crafted entirely from wool, the flatweave construction provides a smooth, low-profile surface that sits comfortably under doors and handles daily foot traffic with ease.

The runner format makes it especially suited for hallways, entryways, or narrow spaces that benefit from a touch of colour and texture. Because this piece is entirely one of a kind, you are acquiring a unique work of textile art that cannot be replicated or replaced.

Woven by skilled weavers in Afghanistan, the piece carries the distinct identity of its origin. The natural wool fibers provide a grounded, tactile feel underfoot, making your home feel instantly more welcoming and cosy.

Kelim weaving in Afghanistan is an ancient nomadic art form, developed by tribal groups who required durable, lightweight, and versatile textiles for daily life. These flatwoven pieces served as floor coverings, blankets, and storage bags, designed to withstand the demands of travel across rugged landscapes.

The term Kelim refers specifically to a flatweave constructed without a pile, where the pattern is created by tightly weaving the weft threads through the warp. This technique results in a reversible textile with a crisp, geometric finish and a characteristic ribbed texture that is highly valued for its clean lines.

The visual language of this runner is defined by repeating diamond and geometric motifs, which are traditional symbols of protection and family unity. The vibrant red and multicolor palette is achieved through time-honoured design traditions, creating a structured yet lively composition.

Owning an Afghan Kelim means bringing a piece of living history into your home. These rugs are highly sought after by collectors for their authentic tribal character, representing a direct connection to the weaving communities of Central Asia.

This runner is hand-woven using traditional flatweaving techniques, a process that requires patience, precision, and decades of shared knowledge. Unlike piled rugs, a Kelim is created by tightly interlacing the warp and weft threads to form a flat, durable surface with no pile.

Weighing 1.4 kg and measuring 200 by 68 cm, this piece showcases a lightweight yet highly durable structure. Every color shift and geometric transition represents a conscious decision by the weaver, resulting in a robust textile that is built to last.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
