Kelim Afghan Old Style - A Warm Welcome for Your Hallway

This one-of-a-kind Kelim Afghan Old Style runner brings rich Afghan weaving traditions directly into your home with its vibrant hand-woven wool texture.

Experience the grounding comfort of a traditional flatwoven runner underfoot. With a low profile of just 5 mm, this piece sits close to the floor, making it an excellent choice for hallways, entryways, and transition spaces where doors need to clear the rug easily.

Crafted entirely from wool, the runner offers a natural warmth and a robust texture that feels reassuringly solid. The inherent properties of wool ensure that the surface remains resilient over time, naturally repelling dust and keeping its character through years of daily use.

As a one-of-a-kind creation, this runner carries a unique story. No two pieces are ever identical, meaning the specific arrangement of geometric motifs and rich tones you see here belongs to your home alone.

Woven in Afghanistan, this piece represents a proud regional heritage of textile art. Bringing it into your home connects your contemporary living space with generations of weaving knowledge and cultural expression.

Design

The design features a structured central band filled with repeating diamond motifs, a classic symbol of protection and strength in tribal weaving. These geometric shapes are framed by detailed decorative borders that guide the eye along the length of the runner.

The colour palette balances deep reds with cool blues, warm beige, and soft green accents. This rich combination of tones creates a balanced visual rhythm that adds warmth and interest to narrower spaces like corridors and entry halls.

Afghan Kelims have their origins in the nomadic and semi-nomadic traditions of Central Asia and Afghanistan. Originally woven as functional household items, storage bags, and protective floor coverings, these flatweaves were designed to withstand the rigours of travel and daily life in harsh climates.

The term Kelim refers specifically to the flatweave technique where the pattern is created by weaving the coloured weft threads directly through the warp. This method produces a pileless rug with a clean, geometric appearance that has made Kelims highly sought after by modern design enthusiasts for their graphic clarity.

The visual language of this runner is defined by repeating diamond shapes and step-like borders. These patterns are not merely decorative, they are historical symbols passed down through families, representing the weaver's environment, beliefs, and tribal identity.

Today, these old-style Afghan Kelims are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike. Owning one means preserving a piece of living history, supporting traditional weaving communities, and bringing a genuine slice of nomadic heritage into a modern home.

This runner is hand-woven using traditional flatweaving techniques that require immense patience and precision. Unlike piled rugs, a Kelim is constructed by tightly interlacing the vertical and horizontal threads, creating a smooth, double-sided textile that is both lightweight and incredibly strong.

Weighing 1.4 kg, this runner demonstrates the tight, dense weave characteristic of authentic Afghan flatweaves. Every transition between the red, blue, and beige sections represents a moment where the weaver manually locked the threads, a process that demands hours of focused physical labour.

The absence of a heavy backing allows the natural flexibility of the wool to shine through. This honest, straightforward construction highlights the pure skill of the artisan, resulting in a durable piece that lies flat and holds its shape beautifully.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
