The Kelim Afghan Old Style tradition finds its roots in the nomadic and village cultures of the Middle East. These rugs were historically created by skilled weavers to serve as versatile floor coverings, blankets, or wall hangings, reflecting a heritage of utility and beauty that has been passed down through generations.

Kelim refers to a specific flat-weaving technique where the design is created by interweaving the coloured weft strands through the warp, resulting in a rug without a pile. This method produces a lightweight yet incredibly robust fabric, highly valued for its ability to lie flat and endure the rigours of daily life in diverse living environments.

The visual language of these rugs is defined by bold geometric motifs and a vibrant palette of natural dyes. This specific runner showcases traditional patterns that have been used for centuries, often featuring diamonds and stepped borders that symbolise protection or local tribal identity. The use of varied colours across the field makes it a standout piece in any setting.

Collectors value these rugs for their authenticity and the human story behind every thread. Owning a piece from this tradition is an investment in cultural heritage, representing a level of craftsmanship that remains largely unchanged by time. It serves as a reminder of the artistry involved in creating functional objects that are meant to be lived with and cherished.

This runner is meticulously hand-woven, a traditional process that requires immense patience and skill. By interlacing the Wool warp and weft, the artisan creates a flat, durable fabric that is built to withstand daily use while maintaining its structural integrity over time.

The 1.4 kg weight of this runner is a direct result of its dense, high-quality construction. This substantial weight ensures that the rug lays flat and provides a stable presence on your floor, reflecting the hours of dedicated labour invested by the weaver in every centimetre of the piece.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean.
