Design

The runner features a central row of diamond medallions, surrounded by geometric borders and zig-zag patterns in orange, blue, green, and white. The flat surface is finished with traditional fringe details at both ends.

Kelim rugs have a long history in Afghanistan, where nomadic and semi-nomadic weavers have crafted flatwoven textiles for centuries. These rugs were originally made for practical use in tents and homes, serving as floor coverings, blankets, and storage bags.

The term Kelim refers to a flat, pileless rug made using a plain weave technique where the weft strands are tightly pulled through the warp. This method creates a lightweight, reversible textile that is highly durable and easy to maintain compared to knotted pile rugs.

This runner features a central row of diamond medallions, a classic motif in Afghan weaving that often symbolises protection and family heritage. The geometric borders and zig-zag patterns, rendered in a vibrant mix of orange, blue, and green, create a lively visual rhythm.

Owning an Afghan Kelim is a way to connect with a living craft tradition that has been passed down through generations. Each piece represents hours of skilled work and a deep understanding of natural dyes and wool, making it a valued possession for collectors and design enthusiasts alike.

This runner is hand woven in Afghanistan using traditional flatweaving techniques that require immense skill and patience. The artisan carefully interlaces the wool warp and weft to build the geometric patterns row by row, ensuring a tight and uniform structure.

Weighing 1.8 kg for its 252 x 72 cm size, the runner demonstrates a balanced and dense weave that provides stability on the floor. The physical effort involved in tensioning the loom and weaving such a long piece ensures a durable textile designed to last.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
