Kelim Afghan Old Style - A Warm Welcome for Your Hallway

This one-of-a-kind hand-woven Kelim runner from Afghanistan brings warmth and character to your home with its vibrant orange tones and traditional tribal patterns.

This hand-woven wool runner offers a practical low profile of 5 mm, making it an excellent choice for busy areas like hallways and entryways where doors need to clear the floor easily. Crafted entirely from wool, the flatwoven surface provides a firm yet comfortable feel underfoot, bringing natural warmth and texture to your daily steps.

As a truly one-of-a-kind piece, this runner carries a unique character that cannot be replicated. When you place this rug in your home, you are acquiring an individual work of textile art that will never be made in this exact form again, ensuring your interior remains personal and distinct.

Woven in Afghanistan, the runner showcases a rich palette of orange and multicolor tones. The central design features a series of traditional tribal diamonds that run down the length of the piece, framed by delicate fringes that complete its authentic look.

Design

The design is defined by a striking series of nested diamond motifs that run centrally along the vibrant orange field. Accented with shades of blue, green, and yellow, the geometric patterns create a lively rhythm that is beautifully framed by a simple decorative border and short fringes.

The flatwoven Kelim tradition in Afghanistan is deeply rooted in the nomadic and village lifestyles of the region. Historically woven for practical home use, these textiles served as floor coverings, blankets, and storage bags, designed to withstand the demands of travel while bringing colour to living spaces.

The term Kelim refers to a pileless, flatwoven textile where the pattern is created by weaving the coloured weft threads directly through the warp. This technique produces a lightweight yet highly durable fabric that is often reversible, showcasing the weaver's technical mastery on both sides of the rug.

The visual language of this runner is defined by repeating diamond lozenges, which are classic tribal symbols representing protection and family unity. The bold use of orange as a dominant field colour is a beautiful variation on traditional regional palettes, making the piece feel both historic and contemporary.

Acquiring an Afghan Kelim means bringing a piece of living history into your home. These rugs are highly valued by collectors and homemakers alike for their graphic modern appeal, honest construction, and the direct connection they offer to ancient weaving heritages.

This Kelim runner is hand-woven using traditional flatweaving techniques that require immense patience and precision. Unlike knotted rugs, a Kelim is constructed by tightly interlacing the warp and weft threads, a process that demands a highly skilled hand to maintain even tension and sharp geometric patterns throughout the length of the runner.

Weighing 1.4 kg and measuring 191 by 74 cm, the compact structure of this piece reflects the tight packing of the wool fibres during weaving. This dense construction ensures the runner lies flat on your floor and maintains its shape and structural integrity over years of regular use.

Ull
