Design

The runner features a vibrant multicolor composition with repeating rows of geometric diamond motifs across the surface. The design incorporates shades of orange, green, purple, and white arranged in a structured, symmetrical layout. The surface appears flat and even with clean lines defining each shape. Short fringed borders are visible at both ends of the piece.

Kelim weaving is one of the oldest textile traditions in Afghanistan, developed by nomadic and village communities who created flatwoven rugs for both practical use and artistic expression. These rugs were originally made to insulate tents and homes, serving as protective barriers against the elements while carrying the cultural identity of the weavers.

The term Kelim refers to a flatwoven rug made without a pile, where the weft strands are tightly woven through the warp to create both the structure and the pattern. This technique requires exceptional precision, as the weaver must change yarn colors to form the geometric shapes, leaving small slits or clean transitions that define the style.

The visual language of this piece is defined by repeating diamond motifs, which are traditional symbols of protection and family in Afghan weaving culture. The use of vibrant, contrasting colors arranged in structured rows creates a lively yet balanced composition that stands out from more muted traditional designs.

Owning an Afghan Kelim means bringing a piece of living history into your home. Each rug represents a continuation of weaving knowledge passed down through generations, making it a valued acquisition for those who appreciate authentic craftsmanship and cultural heritage.

This runner is crafted by hand using traditional flatweaving techniques in Afghanistan. Every single pattern and color transition is created by the weaver, demanding a high level of focus and skill to maintain the symmetry and tension of the design across its length.

With a weight of 1.5 kg and dimensions of 197 by 74 cm, the piece demonstrates a tight, firm weave that is characteristic of quality handmade Kelims. This compact structure ensures the rug lies flat on the floor and resists shifting, reflecting the careful physical effort invested in its creation.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
