Design

This runner features a vibrant multicolor composition with a dominant orange background. It displays an intricate geometric pattern made up of repeating diamond shapes filled with various colours such as yellow, blue, purple, and white. The surface has a flat, textured appearance with visible horizontal weaving lines and short fringes at both ends.

Kelim rugs from Afghanistan have a long and celebrated history, rooted in the nomadic and semi-nomadic weaving traditions of the region. These flatwoven textiles were originally crafted for practical use in daily life, serving as floor coverings, blankets, and storage bags.

The term Kelim refers to a flatwoven rug produced by tightly interweaving the warp and weft strands, creating a smooth surface without a raised pile. This traditional hand-weaving technique produces a lightweight yet exceptionally strong structure that is easy to maintain and highly durable.

This specific piece showcases a vibrant orange field adorned with repeating diamond motifs, a classic geometric pattern deeply embedded in Afghan design history. The multicolor diamonds in yellow, blue, purple, and white represent traditional tribal symbols of protection and family heritage.

Acquiring an Afghan Kelim means investing in a living craft tradition. These rugs are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their honest construction, vibrant natural tones, and the distinct cultural stories woven into every row.

This runner is entirely handmade using traditional flatweaving techniques passed down through generations of Afghan weavers. Every horizontal line and geometric detail is created by carefully interlacing the wool threads by hand, requiring immense patience and precision.

With a weight of 2.4 kg spread across its 301 x 79 cm size, the rug demonstrates a tight, compact weave. This density ensures the runner lies flat on the floor, maintaining its shape and resisting wear even in high-traffic hallways.

The creation of a hand-woven piece of this size represents weeks of focused manual labor. This human effort gives the rug its unique character and structural integrity, justifying its value as a premium piece of functional art.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
