Kelim Afghan Old Style - A Runner With Authentic Character

This one-of-a-kind Afghan runner features traditional geometric motifs and a natural wool construction, bringing a grounding, tactile presence to your home.

This one-of-a-kind runner brings a sense of history and grounded warmth to any hallway or narrow living space. Its long, slender proportions are perfectly suited for bridging rooms, while the low 5 mm pile ensures it sits comfortably under doors and remains easy to maintain in high-traffic areas.

Crafted from durable wool, the rug offers a natural, tactile texture that feels soft yet substantial underfoot. The material is prized for its ability to regulate temperature, keeping your home feeling warm and comfortable throughout the year while naturally absorbing sound to create a calmer atmosphere.

The design features intricate geometric patterns that draw on centuries of regional artistry. Because each piece is woven individually, the subtle variations in the weave and pattern placement make this runner a truly unique addition to your home, ensuring that no two rugs are exactly alike.

Choosing this piece means welcoming a genuine slice of Afghan heritage into your living space. Its authentic, aged appearance adds instant depth and character, providing a focal point that is both functional and visually compelling for those who appreciate the beauty of traditional craft.

Kelim rugs have a long and storied history across the Middle East and Central Asia, serving as essential household items for nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes. These flat-woven textiles were historically used for everything from floor coverings and room dividers to saddlebags and wall hangings, reflecting the versatile needs of life in the region.

The term 'Kelim' refers to the specific flat-weaving technique where the weft strands are pulled tightly against the warp to create a durable, pileless fabric. This method allows for the creation of sharp, clean geometric shapes and intricate patterns that are visible on both sides of the rug, making them highly prized for their structural honesty.

The visual language of these runners is deeply rooted in the tribal identities of their makers. You will often see repeating geometric motifs, stepped diamonds, and stylized floral elements, all of which are passed down through generations. These patterns serve as a visual shorthand for the weaver’s heritage, with colour palettes traditionally sourced from local natural dyes.

Owning an Afghan Kelim is an opportunity to connect with a living craft tradition. These rugs are collected not only for their striking aesthetic appeal but for the immense human effort and cultural history woven into every thread. By bringing one into your home, you are preserving a heritage of skill that continues to define the artistic landscape of the region.

This runner is entirely hand-woven, a process that requires immense patience and skill. By interlacing the wool warp and weft by hand, the weaver creates a flat-weave structure that is remarkably strong and reversible, ensuring the rug remains a reliable part of your home for many years to come.

The quality of this runner is evidenced by its weight of 2.6 kg spread across its 297 x 87 cm dimensions. This density reflects the significant amount of wool used and the tight, careful tension applied during the weaving process, which results in a robust finish that maintains its shape and structural integrity even with daily use.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
