Originating from Afghanistan, this piece carries the authentic charm of traditional weaving techniques. Its natural wool construction provides a tactile warmth underfoot while remaining easy to position and move as your interior needs evolve.

Design

The design features a striking combination of orange and blue, accented by green, grey, and white. Its central field is filled with nested diamonds and triangular motifs, framed by a detailed geometric border that anchors the composition.

Kelim rugs have a long history across Afghanistan and the wider region, where they were originally woven by nomadic tribes for practical use as floor coverings, blankets, and storage bags. Unlike piled rugs, Kelims are flatwoven, making them lightweight and highly versatile.

The term Kelim refers to the specific tapestry-weave technique where the horizontal weft threads are tightly packed over the vertical warp threads. This method creates a shared-slit boundary between different colour blocks, resulting in the sharp, geometric lines characteristic of the style.

The visual language of Afghan Kelims is defined by bold geometric patterns, particularly diamond and step motifs. These designs often carry symbolic meanings related to protection, family, and nature, rendered in rich, warm tones derived from traditional colour palettes.

Owning an Afghan Kelim connects your home to an ancient craft tradition. Each piece represents a cultural narrative told through colour and geometry, valued by collectors and homeowners alike for its authenticity and lasting appeal.

This Kelim is hand-woven by skilled artisans in Afghanistan, using techniques passed down through generations. Every thread is carefully interlaced to create a flat, durable structure that showcases the weaver's precision and dedication.

With a weight of 1.1 kg for its compact 130 x 88 cm size, the rug demonstrates a tight, dense weave. This level of manual craftsmanship requires significant time and focus, resulting in a robust textile that is built to last.

By choosing a hand-woven piece, you are supporting a rich heritage of manual weaving. The subtle variations in the geometric pattern are a direct result of this human process, giving the rug its distinct personality.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
