The Kelim Afghan Old Style rugs are deeply rooted in the nomadic traditions of Afghanistan, where weaving is a vital cultural expression. These rugs draw inspiration from the diverse ethnic groups of the region, carrying forward motifs and techniques that have been passed down through generations of families living in the rugged landscapes of Central Asia.

A kelim is a flat-woven rug, meaning it lacks a pile, which distinguishes it from traditional knotted rugs. This technique involves interlacing the warp and weft threads to create a durable, reversible textile that is both versatile and lightweight. The absence of pile allows the intricate patterns to appear sharper and more defined, showcasing the weaver's ability to maintain tension and precision.

The visual language of these rugs is defined by bold geometric shapes, most notably the diamond and various tribal motifs. These patterns are often arranged in repeating sequences or central medallions, framed by delicate, ornamental borders. The use of vibrant, natural-inspired dyes on a neutral ground is a hallmark of this style, creating a balanced aesthetic that feels both ancient and contemporary.

Owning a piece from this tradition is an opportunity to connect with a rich heritage of craft and storytelling. These rugs are highly valued by collectors for their authenticity and the sheer skill required to produce them by hand. By choosing a one-of-a-kind kelim, you are investing in a functional piece of art that represents the enduring legacy of Afghan weaving traditions.

This runner is meticulously hand-woven by skilled artisans, a process that emphasises the human touch and precision in every thread. Unlike machine-made alternatives, this hand-woven construction results in a thinner, more flexible, and lightweight profile, making it easy to manage and position throughout your home.

The 3.4 kg weight of this 369 x 93 cm runner indicates a dense and compact weave, reflecting the significant time and effort invested in its creation. This density is essential for the rug's structural integrity, ensuring that it remains durable and retains its shape over many years of use.

Every detail in the geometric pattern is a testament to the artisan's dedication, as each row and motif is carefully aligned without the aid of automated tools. This level of craftsmanship ensures that you are receiving a durable, well-made piece that showcases the skill and traditional techniques of its origin.
