KunduzHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black146 x 196 cm

Kunduz rugs originate from the northern province of Kunduz in Afghanistan, a region famous for its rich weaving heritage. This area has long been a melting pot of nomadic and settled cultures, resulting in a unique blending of design traditions that are highly prized by collectors.

The wool used in these rugs is typically sourced from local sheep, known for producing a resilient and naturally lustrous fiber. This high-grade wool absorbs natural dyes beautifully, giving the finished pile a deep, glowing quality that matures and develops a soft patina over the years.

Visually, Kunduz rugs are characterised by their complex geometric borders and prominent central medallions. The traditional use of deep reds, warm terracotta, and soft cream tones creates a balanced contrast that highlights the intricate geometric motifs and floral elements.

Owning a Kunduz rug is about preserving a piece of living history. These rugs are celebrated globally for their durability and artistic depth, representing a proud cultural legacy that brings genuine character and historical weight to modern living spaces.

This exceptional rug was created entirely by hand using traditional knotting techniques that have remained unchanged for centuries. Every single knot represents the deliberate choice and steady hand of a skilled artisan, demanding patience and a high level of craftsmanship.

With a substantial weight of 8.6 kg for its 196 by 146 cm size, the rug demonstrates an incredibly dense and robust construction. This weight indicates that a generous amount of high-quality wool was packed tightly into the weave, a process that requires months of dedicated labor to complete.

The structural integrity of this hand-knotted piece ensures it can withstand decades of foot traffic. Unlike machine-made alternatives, the individual hand-secured knots prevent shedding and structural wear, making it a lasting investment for your home.
