Kunduz - Crafted to Bring Warmth to Your Home

Discover this truly one-of-a-kind Kunduz rug from Afghanistan, featuring traditional motifs and a cosy 10 mm wool pile that feels wonderful underfoot.

Transform your living space with this genuine Kunduz rug, originating from the rich crafting traditions of Afghanistan. Each piece is completely unique, meaning this exact combination of colours and patterns exists nowhere else in the world and will never be made again. It brings a truly personal touch to your home.

Walking on this rug offers a wonderfully tactile and comforting experience. The thick 10 mm pile provides natural warmth and softness underfoot, while also offering excellent sound absorption to help create a calm, quiet atmosphere in your room.

Woven using 100% wool, this rug provides a dense and durable surface that handles everyday life with ease. Wool naturally repels dirt and maintains its resilient structure, ensuring your floor remains inviting and comfortable for years to come.

The thoughtful construction includes 90,000 knots per m2, a density that brings remarkable clarity to the traditional design details while creating a sturdy, supportive pile. This high level of craftsmanship ensures the rug holds its beauty and stands up to daily use in busy family spaces.

Kunduz rugs originate from the northern Afghan city of Kunduz, an important trading hub situated near the border of Central Asia. The weavers in this region draw upon centuries of nomadic and village weaving traditions, blending techniques and design motifs shared across the broader Middle Eastern landscape.

The 2ply wool construction often found in these traditions means that two individual strands of wool are twisted together before being knotted into the foundation. This technique produces a stronger, more resilient pile that shows off the natural lustre of the wool while increasing the overall durability of the rug.

Visually, Kunduz rugs are celebrated for their distinctive geometric layouts and repeated guls, which are stylised floral or medallion motifs arranged in orderly rows across the field. Enclosed by carefully detailed borders, these patterns reflect a deep-rooted cultural language that values symmetry, symbolism, and harmony.

Owning a handmade Kunduz rug means bringing a piece of living heritage into your home. Collectors and design enthusiasts value these pieces for their authentic connection to regional craft traditions, offering a level of human artistry and lasting value that modern machine-made floor coverings simply cannot replicate.

This rug is entirely handmade using traditional hand-knotted techniques passed down through generations in Afghanistan. Crafting a piece of this size involves placing approximately 273,375 individual knots by hand, a meticulous process that requires immense skill, patience, and dedication.

A skilled artisan spends months working on a loom to complete a single rug of this density and scale. Every row of knots is carefully packed down by hand to ensure structural integrity, creating a firm foundation that prevents curling and keeps the edges straight over decades of use.

The combination of the heavy 9.1 kg weight and the precise knot count reflects the substantial time and human effort invested in its creation. This level of dedication results in a rug with exceptional durability and a tight pile that keeps its shape and appearance long-term.

Ull
