KunduzHand KnottedRug

Black / Brown149 x 203 cm

Kunduz rugs trace their roots to the rich weaving traditions of northern Afghanistan, where nomadic and village craftspeople have practised carpet making for generations. These designs draw influence from ancient Central Asian motifs, adapting historic patterns into distinct regional styles that celebrate local storytelling through wool and dye.

The traditional hand-knotting techniques used here ensure a long-lasting structure. Artisans use time-honoured methods passed down through families, relying on traditional upright looms and specialised hand tools to build each row of knots with remarkable consistency.

Visually, Kunduz rugs are known for their deep red fields and structured geometric medallions or repeating octagonal gul motifs, framed by carefully balanced borders. These motifs are deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of the region, creating a striking visual rhythm that anchors traditional and eclectic interiors alike.

Owning a Kunduz rug connects your home to a long lineage of textile artistry. Valued by collectors and interior lovers for their authentic craftsmanship and enduring materials, these rugs represent a tangible piece of cultural history that brings genuine character to modern living spaces.

This Kunduz rug is painstakingly hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Afghanistan, a process requiring months of focused human effort and precise hand movements. Weavers tie each knot individually by hand to build a dense foundation that ensures the rug retains its beauty over generations.

Weighing 9.1 kg across a 203 x 149 cm area, this substantial weight reflects the dense concentration of wool packed into the foundation. With 160,000 knots per m2, the total knot count reaches approximately 483,000 individual knots, each placed with meticulous care to achieve sharp pattern details and a robust pile.
