KunduzHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black157 x 213 cm

Kunduz rugs originate from the northern regions of Afghanistan, near the historical trading hubs that connected Central Asia and South Asia. Weavers in this area draw upon centuries of nomadic and village weaving traditions, passing down intricate technical knowledge and time-honoured design patterns from one generation to the next.

The construction relies on time-tested techniques where individual wool yarn strands are tied firmly to the foundation warp and weft threads. This traditional hand-knotting method ensures that the pile remains securely locked in place, producing a durable textile capable of lasting for generations with proper care.

Visually, Kunduz carpets are celebrated for their balanced compositions, featuring repeating geometric guls or medallion motifs across a rich red field, complemented by deeply detailed multi-layered borders. The interplay of dark blue and warm accent tones highlights the traditional colour palette typical of northern Afghan workshops.

Collecting a Kunduz rug means preserving a living craft tradition rooted in Persian heritage. Each piece represents months of focused human labour and artistic expression, offering both enduring utility and a genuine connection to historic artisan communities.

Creating this hand-knotted Kunduz rug requires an immense amount of time, patience, and traditional skill from experienced artisans. Each of the 160000 knots per m2 is tied individually by hand onto the foundation, amounting to hundreds of thousands of precise knots across the entire surface of the rug.

With a total weight of 10 kg distributed across its 213 x 157 cm dimensions, this piece reflects a dense construction packed with substantial raw material and careful labour. Completing a rug of this size and density takes skilled weavers many months of daily work, ensuring a durable structure and sharp pattern definition that machine-made alternatives cannot match.
