Middle Atlas rug - A Warm and Grounded Touch for Your Floor

Bring home a truly one-of-a-kind Moroccan Berber Beni Ourain rug, featuring a thick 15 mm pile and rich wool comfort.

This Middle Atlas rug brings a welcoming warmth and comforting texture to your living space. Walking across the floor, you will feel the deep, soft pile that offers genuine physical comfort and helps absorb sound in busy rooms.

Woven entirely from 100% wool, the surface provides natural insulation that keeps your room feeling cosy during cooler months while remaining breathable year-round. The generous 15 mm thickness creates a wonderfully cushioned feel underfoot.

As a genuine one-of-a-kind piece crafted in Morocco, no two rugs are identical, meaning this exact combination of motifs and tones exists nowhere else in the world. Owning this rug gives you a distinct creation that will never be replicated.

The 90000 knots per m2 density results in a dense, resilient pile where each knot contributes to a clearer pattern definition and long-lasting durability, ensuring the rug maintains its comfort and character for years to come.

This rug belongs to the rich weaving traditions of the Middle Atlas mountains in Morocco, where Berber communities have practiced carpet-making for centuries. These pieces were originally crafted by tribal women primarily for household warmth and daily use rather than trade, utilizing local sheep's wool suited to the mountain climate.

The traditional hand-knotted technique involves tying individual strands of wool onto a foundation warp and weft, building a plush and durable pile. This method requires considerable patience and skill, passing down knowledge from one generation to the next within Berber households.

The design features spontaneous tribal motifs and symbols that reflect the weaver's personal experiences, surroundings, and stories. Unlike mass-produced items, these spontaneous arrangements give each creation its own distinct visual language.

Collecting a Berber Beni Ourain rug means preserving a living craft heritage. Owning such a piece brings authentic cultural depth and artisan skill directly into your home, standing as a testament to traditions that continue to thrive today.

This rug is entirely handmade through traditional hand-knotted techniques, representing hundreds of hours of careful human effort. Skilled artisans tie each individual knot by hand, building the structure stitch by stitch to achieve lasting resilience and a dense, supportive pile.

With a knot density of 90000 knots per m2 spread across its 270 x 173 cm dimensions, the completed piece contains approximately 42,000 individual knots. This precise hand-tying method ensures that the pile remains securely anchored and capable of withstanding daily use.

Weighing 14 kg, the substantial construction reflects the heavy investment of natural wool and painstaking labour required to craft a rug of this density and size.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
