OushakHand KnottedRug

Brown / Orange204 x 305 cm

The Usak rug tradition traces its roots back to the historic town of Uşak in western Turkey, which served as a major centre for rug production during the peak of the Ottoman Empire. These rugs became famous globally for their large-scale, bold patterns and their ability to bridge the aesthetic gap between the East and the West.

Today, the tradition of Usak rug-making has evolved and flourished in India, where artisans apply these classic design principles with a contemporary touch. The term 'Usak' refers to a specific design lineage characterised by open compositions and soft, often medallion-focused patterns that feel less rigid than other traditional styles.

Signature elements of this style include large, stylised floral motifs and medallions that appear to float on a field of muted colours. These designs are intentionally organic and fluid, avoiding the strict geometry found in many other regional traditions, which allows them to fit seamlessly into a wide variety of home environments.

Collecting a piece from this tradition is an investment in cultural continuity. These rugs are highly valued for their ability to bring a sense of history and warmth into a home, representing a legacy of skill that prioritises artistic expression and a welcoming, calm atmosphere over mass-market trends.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and skill from experienced artisans. By meticulously tying each knot by hand, the weavers create a structure that is far more durable and resilient than any machine-made alternative, ensuring the rug can withstand daily use while maintaining its integrity.

With a total weight of 14.9 kg for this 305 x 204 cm piece, the substantial density of the materials is evident. This weight is a direct result of the generous amount of high-quality Wool and Cotton foundation used, providing a heavy, stable base that lies flat and feels substantial underfoot.

The time and human effort invested in every square centimetre of this rug are reflected in its beautiful, crisp pattern definition and long-lasting pile. This level of craftsmanship ensures that you are acquiring a piece that celebrates human artistry rather than mass production.
