Pakistan Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Brown129 x 179 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, a historical hub for trade and textile artistry. While the design lineage traces back to the nomadic tribes of the region, the finest contemporary examples are celebrated for being woven in Pakistan, where artisans have perfected these complex patterns over generations.

The '2ply' designation is a mark of exceptional quality in this tradition. It indicates that the wool used in the pile is composed of two strands twisted together before being knotted. This technique results in a thicker, more lustrous, and significantly more durable pile that resists wear while offering a softer, more plush texture.

The visual language of the Bokhara is dominated by the repeating gul motif, an octagonal or elephant-foot design that represents protection and prosperity. These are typically arranged in clean, formal rows across the field, often framed by elaborate decorative borders that draw from centuries of regional design evolution.

Owning a hand-knotted Bokhara is an investment in cultural history. These rugs are highly valued by collectors for their consistency and the immense skill required to maintain the symmetry of their intricate patterns. By choosing this piece, you are preserving a legacy of craft that values human touch over mass production.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans, a process that requires immense patience and precision. By individually tying each knot onto the foundation, the weavers ensure a level of structural integrity and pattern definition that simply cannot be achieved by machine-made alternatives.

The 360,000 knots per m2 density is a testament to the labour-intensive nature of this craft. For a rug of this size, this count represents hundreds of thousands of individual gestures, requiring weeks of dedicated work to complete. This density is the key to the rug’s substantial feel and its ability to withstand daily use.

The use of high-quality wool, combined with this precise knotting technique, creates a durable pile that is built for longevity. Every element, from the tension of the foundation to the uniformity of the knots, is managed by hand to ensure the final piece meets the highest standards of traditional artistry.
