PatchworkHand KnottedRug

Dark grey / Black170 x 240 cm

Patchwork rugs represent a modern evolution of the rich carpet-making traditions found throughout the Middle East. While this region has long been celebrated for its classic hand-knotted weaving, the patchwork movement was born from a desire to preserve and celebrate the beauty of older, worn-out carpets that might otherwise be discarded. This practice honours the history of the original pieces while allowing them to find new purpose in contemporary interiors.

The craft relies on a deep understanding of textile history, as the artisans must evaluate the condition and colour palette of each fragment before integration. By selecting specific parts of classic rugs, they create a balanced composition that highlights the original knotting techniques and natural dyes. This process is not just about assembly, but about curating a narrative that bridges the gap between ancient traditions and modern design sensibilities.

The design language of these rugs is defined by the juxtaposition of texture and tone. While traditional rugs often feature formal, symmetrical borders and central medallions, the patchwork style breaks these patterns into a grid-like layout. This creates a rhythmic, geometric visual experience where the individual history of each patch provides a unique depth of character that cannot be achieved with mass-produced alternatives.

Owning a patchwork rug is an act of cultural preservation. These pieces are highly valued by collectors and enthusiasts alike, as they represent a bridge between the past and the present. By choosing such a rug, you are acquiring a piece that carries the weight of history and the skill of multiple generations of weavers, ensuring that the legacy of these traditional textiles continues to endure in your home.

Each patch in this rug is hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that ensures structural integrity and lasting quality. By repurposing these existing pieces, skilled artisans spend countless hours precisely aligning patterns and securing seams to create a smooth, unified surface. The effort involved in sourcing, cleaning, and re-assembling these individual segments is substantial, reflecting a commitment to sustainable and traditional craftsmanship.

The total weight of 14.3 kg is a testament to the density and richness of the materials used in this construction. This significant weight indicates that the rug is made from substantial, high-quality wool that provides a dense pile, ensuring that the finished piece is robust and capable of enduring for many years to come. The substantial nature of the construction is what gives the rug its professional finish and reliable performance.

The final assembly is a work of precision, requiring a keen eye for detail to ensure the patchwork flows seamlessly across the entire 240 x 170 cm surface. This meticulous arrangement transforms separate, older elements into a new, functional piece of décor. The dedication to this process is why each rug stands as a unique, premium addition to any interior.
