Shabargan - A Quiet Presence for Your Home

This one-of-a-kind runner from Afghanistan brings a sense of grounded warmth to any hallway or narrow space with its earthy tones and intricate, hand-knotted detailing.

The Shabargan runner is a striking example of Afghan artistry, defined by its earthy, muted base and carefully placed geometric accents. Its wool pile offers a soft, inviting texture underfoot that naturally absorbs sound, making it a practical and comforting addition to high-traffic areas like hallways or galleries.

Because this piece is entirely one-of-a-kind, you are bringing home a creation that exists nowhere else in the world. The subtle variations in the weave and colour reflect the human touch, ensuring that no two rugs are ever exactly alike. Once this piece finds a home, it will never be recreated in this exact form again.

The 10 mm pile provides a substantial, durable feel that stands up to daily use while maintaining its charm. Its density ensures that the rug stays in place well and provides a welcoming warmth that transforms a simple floor into a focal point of your interior.

Originating from the skilled weaving traditions of Afghanistan, this runner showcases a balance between minimalist open space and detailed, patterned borders. It is a piece designed to age gracefully, becoming a lasting part of your home environment as the years go by.

The tradition of rug weaving in Afghanistan is deeply rooted in the cultural identity of the region, where the craft has been passed down through generations. These rugs often reflect the nomadic and village-based histories of the local people, who use weaving as a way to express their stories and connection to the land.

Afghan rugs are celebrated for their use of high-quality wool and their ability to incorporate both traditional and contemporary design sensibilities. The term hand-knotted refers to the laborious technique of tying individual knots to a foundation, a method that is prized for its longevity and the unique texture it provides.

The design of the Shabargan runner features distinctive, repeating geometric motifs within its borders, which are characteristic of the region's artistic language. These patterns are often inspired by the surrounding landscape and ancient symbols, creating a visual rhythm that is both orderly and deeply expressive.

Owning an Afghan runner is an investment in a storied craft that values patience and precision over mass production. It represents a link to an ancient practice, offering not just a floor covering, but a piece of cultural history that brings authenticity and warmth to any modern home.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused labour to its completion. The process requires a high degree of precision, with each strand of wool carefully tied to the foundation to ensure the durability and structural integrity that only a handmade piece can offer.

With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the construction of this 2.96 m2 runner involves approximately 473,600 individual knots. This high knot count is the hallmark of its quality, allowing for the crispness of the geometric borders and providing a dense, resilient pile that is built to withstand generations of use.

The substantial weight of 10.1 kg serves as a clear indicator of the generous amount of high-quality wool used in its creation. This weight, combined with the complex knotting process, results in a heavy, stable rug that lies flat and maintains its shape, reflecting the immense time and effort invested by the craftspeople.
