ShabarganHand KnottedRug

Brown / Orange148 x 219 cm

This rug originates from the rich weaving traditions of Afghanistan, a region where carpet-making has served as a cornerstone of cultural expression and daily life for generations. Artisans pass down specific pattern repertoires and knotting techniques through families, preserving ancient designs that reflect the heritage and landscapes of Central Asia.

The traditional hand-knotting technique used here involves wrapping individual strands of yarn around the foundation warps and securing each with a specialised knot. This labour-intensive method produces a durable pile that stands up to daily wear while maintaining its soft handfeel and rich visual appearance.

The visual language of this piece centres around an intricate central medallion surrounded by traditional geometric and floral motifs, enclosed by carefully structured borders. These repeating symbols draw on centuries of design evolution, where every border line and corner element tells a story of regional artistry.

Collecting a handmade rug from this tradition means acquiring a piece of living history that connects your modern home to ancient craft routes. It represents a tangible investment in human skill, heritage, and enduring quality that mass-produced floor coverings simply cannot match.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans who tie each knot individually by hand onto the foundation. Creating a piece of this scale and detail involves months of dedicated labour, careful colour coordination, and precise hand movements that no machine can replicate.

With a density of 90,000 knots per m2 distributed across its 219 x 148 cm dimensions, the total knot count reaches approximately 291,000 individual knots. This high concentration of hand-tied wool demands exceptional precision, resulting in the crisp pattern definition and long-term structural integrity that define authentic handmade rugs.

Weighing 10.4 kg, the substantial construction reflects the heavy investment of material and time required to build such a dense pile. This weight ensures the rug lies flat and stable on your floor, signifying quality craftsmanship that is built to last.
