ShabarganHand KnottedRug

Brown / Orange154 x 197 cm

The tradition of rug weaving in Afghanistan is deeply rooted in the cultural history of the Middle East. These rugs are often named after the regions or towns where they are produced, and the Shabargan draws its influence from the rich, nomadic heritage of the northern Afghan plains, where weaving has served as both a practical necessity and a form of artistic expression for generations.

Technically, Afghan rugs are celebrated for their sturdy construction. The use of traditional hand-knotting techniques ensures that the Wool is tightly packed, creating a pile that is not only soft but remarkably long-lasting. This method is the hallmark of professional weaving, where the strength of the foundation supports the intricate details woven into the surface.

The visual language of these rugs often features geometric motifs and symbolic shapes, such as the repeating medallions and stylised floral elements seen here. These patterns are deeply connected to the environment and history of the weavers, often incorporating a rich, earthy colour palette derived from natural dyes that age beautifully over time.

Collecting a piece from this tradition is an investment in human skill and cultural preservation. Owning a Shabargan means bringing a slice of ancient artistry into your modern home, connecting you to a lineage of makers who have perfected their craft over centuries. It is an authentic, enduring piece of heritage that tells a story through every knot.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and skill. By carefully tying each individual knot by hand, the artisan ensures a durable and dense pile that maintains its structural integrity and visual clarity over decades of use.

The craftsmanship is evident in the substantial weight of 9.7 kg for this 197 x 154 cm piece. This density is a direct result of the intensive labour involved in the construction, providing a heavy, high-quality foundation that lays flat and stands up to the demands of a busy home.

Every element of the design is brought to life through this traditional technique, allowing for the precise execution of the complex patterns seen across the surface. This commitment to traditional methods is what gives the rug its lasting quality and distinctive, authentic charm.
