ShabarganHand KnottedRug

Orange / Brown183 x 269 cm

Shabargan rugs trace their cultural roots to northern Afghanistan, near the historic city of Sheberghan along ancient trading routes. This region has long been a cultural crossroads where nomadic and settled weaving traditions merge, resulting in distinctive floor coverings known for their storytelling motifs and earthy colour palettes.

The traditional hand-knotted construction relies on tightly tied knots that secure the wool pile to the foundation warp and weft threads. This time-honoured technique creates a dense and enduring surface, ensuring the rug handles daily foot traffic while retaining its tactile softness and structural strength.

Characterised by geometric field designs, repeating tribal symbols, and symbolic borders, Shabargan rugs draw on centuries of regional iconography. Artisans often incorporate hooked medallions, animal motifs, and stylised floral elements, framed by protective borders that reflect the nomadic heritage of the region's makers.

Collecting a rug from this Afghan tradition means welcoming a piece of living cultural history into your home. The combination of durable natural materials and generational weaving knowledge ensures these floor coverings remain cherished focal points that only grow more characterful over time.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans, involving a traditional craft process that demands months of patient human effort. Weavers carefully tie each individual knot by hand onto the foundation, ensuring exceptional structural integrity and long-term durability.

With a knot density of 90,000 knots per square metre across the 269 x 183 cm dimensions, the completed piece contains approximately 44,284 individual knots. This high density reflects the remarkable scale of handwork invested, resulting in a dense, resilient pile and precise pattern details that only dedicated manual craftsmanship can achieve.
