Tabriz 50 RajHand KnottedRug

Brown / Black75 x 120 cm

The Tabriz rug tradition hails from one of the oldest carpet-weaving centres in the Middle East. Located in a city with a rich history of trade and artistic exchange, Tabriz weavers have long been known for their ability to synthesise complex designs, often drawing inspiration from classical architecture and historic manuscript illuminations.

The term 50 Raj refers to the traditional system of measuring knot density, where 'raj' indicates the number of knots per 7 cm of the foundation. A 50 Raj rug is indicative of a high-tier weave, requiring exceptional skill and eyesight from the artisan. This high knot count allows for the fluid, curvilinear patterns that define the style, ensuring the design remains sharp and clear even in intricate areas.

Visually, Tabriz rugs are celebrated for their sophisticated medallion compositions and densely packed floral fields. Often framed by elaborate, multi-layered borders, the design language here is one of balance and formality. While traditional palettes often favour rich reds and ivories, the true hallmark of a Tabriz is the precision of the drawing and the harmonious transition between colours.

Collecting a Tabriz rug is a commitment to preserving a craft that has survived for centuries. These pieces are valued for their cultural weight and the undeniable skill required to produce them. Owning one is more than just a decor choice; it is an appreciation of an ancient heritage that continues to evolve while maintaining its core standards of excellence.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans, a process that demands immense precision and patience. By tying each individual knot by hand, the weaver ensures a level of structural integrity and pattern clarity that simply cannot be achieved by mechanical means.

With a density of 490,000 knots per m2, this rug represents a significant investment of time and human effort. Given its size of 120 x 75 cm, the total knot count is approximately 44,100, which reflects the thousands of hours dedicated to its creation. This density is the key to its exceptional durability and the sharp, defined lines of its intricate floral and medallion motifs.

The 3.2 kg weight of this piece is a testament to the abundant, high-quality materials used in its construction. This substantial weight ensures the rug lies flat and remains stable, serving as evidence of the density and quality invested by the maker to ensure it remains a lasting feature in your home for many years to come.
