TurkamanHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red102 x 161 cm

Turkaman rugs represent one of the most enduring weaving traditions of the Middle East. Historically crafted by nomadic tribes, these rugs served both functional and symbolic purposes, acting as protective floor coverings in tents and as highly valued cultural assets. Over centuries, these designs have migrated and evolved, yet they retain the authentic spirit of their tribal origins.

The visual language of Turkaman rugs is defined by the repeating gul motif, a stylized octagonal medallion that represents the identity of the specific tribe that wove it. These medallions are arranged in a structured grid across the rich dark-red field, framed by a series of detailed borders that showcase the weaver's skill and artistic rhythm.

Traditional Turkaman pieces are renowned for their deep, warm color palettes, dominated by rich shades of red, terracotta, and black. These colors were historically derived from natural local dyes, creating a harmonious and grounded aesthetic that has made these rugs highly sought after by collectors and homeowners alike for generations.

This exceptional rug is entirely hand-knotted, a traditional technique that requires immense patience and skill. Every single knot is tied individually by hand, creating a strong and durable structure that machine-made rugs simply cannot replicate.

Weighing 6.6 kg and measuring 161 x 102 cm, the substantial weight of this piece reflects the dense packing of the wool fibers. This high density ensures that the intricate geometric patterns remain sharp and clear, while also providing a robust pile that will withstand years of daily use.

The human effort involved in creating a piece of this quality means that it is not merely a home accessory, but a lasting work of craft. Each subtle variation in the pattern and color is a signature of the weaver's hand, making this a truly individual piece of functional art.
